Security Cadet is a job in the Security department.
Starting Out
Security Cadet might be your first real job on the station after spending a few rounds as a passenger, or maybe you made the enormous mistake of trying this out as your first role. To be clear, this is not a role for absolute beginners. If you are unprepared for the hardship that comes with this job, I. E. if you do not know what the hell you're doing, do not take it on. Familiarize yourself with the game mechanics and the flow of a round first. Try out the Medical Intern or Technical Assistant training roles, get a feel for what's normal and what's not, then come back.
The Art of Listening
The most important thing to do when you are starting out as a security officer is to listen to what your commanding officer, the crew, the passengers, and even the clowns are saying to you. If you fly off the handle when confronted with a slightly irritating situation, you will immediately be labeled as "shitsec," and the people will be right to rise against you. The greatest tool in your tool-belt is not your baton, your disabler, or your stinger grenades, it's your eyes and ears. When you listen, you will know how to defuse a situation. When you listen, you will come to understand who is lying and who is telling the truth. Some people are bad at speaking, give them the benefit of the doubt and ask follow up questions. Be a good listener. You'll be surprised at how much easier your job gets when you prioritize roleplay and helping the crew.
However, it is important to note that many people will call you "shitsec" regardless of what you do. Make sure it doesn't get to your head. Make every attempt to de-escalate, be understanding, and ask your superiors or the admins if you think you did something wrong. Otherwise, ignore any insults or jeers thrown your way.
Negotiations Have Broken Down
Sometimes, there's nothing you can do. The security officers before you were bad at listening, bad at communicating, but very good at showing crew members the business end of their batons. Now, they have it out for you. You are going to need to know how to defend yourself. See the Security Officer guide for details on the tools at your disposal.
Authority
As a Security Cadet, you have a lot of pressure put on you to perform well, but at the same time you are expected to fail. Don't let it get to you! You are expected to call in more experienced people to deal with situations that you are unsure of. If you take the law into your own hands too quickly, there can be consequences under Space Law (and server rules!). Familiarize yourself with this as well as you can, but know there's room for goofing up. Don't allow your authority to get to your head and take things too far, but make sure to work efficiently and for the good of the crew.
Tips
- Your colleagues and Command are generally more trustworthy sources of information
- Find a more experienced officer to pair up with, and never be afraid to ask for help or a second opinion
- Listen to your radio and the people around you
- Police brutality is funny, but the last resort
- Communication is key, and there is always room for improvement.
- ALWAYS listen to Head of Security and your Captain, until you are certain that they've gone bonkers and can't be trusted as a figure of authority(Make sure to ahelp this too!)
