Chaplain is a job in the Service department.
The Chaplain is a roleplay-focused role whose main responsibility is to start up any religious order they see fit and provide spiritual guidance to their peers. While you're not required for the station's basic functionality, you will typically help with the crew's morale by providing spiritual advice, last rites, or exorcisms.
You generally have a lot of leeway in deciding the exact tenets and customs of your religious practice. However, you're still subject to both Space Law and the Server Rules, so you should generally avoid starting a religion that encourages harm to the crew or disruption of the station's normal operation (such as ritual sacrifice, the abolishment of the Science department, etc).
The Bible
You spawn with a bible which can be worn in the belt slot and be used in a few special ways.
- Contains a 1x2 storage space.
- Can be used on a container of water to bless it, turning it into holy water.
- Can be used on a container of blood to bless it, turning it into wine.
- Can be used on living creatures to heal some Brute and Burn damage, with a 5 second cooldown.
- There is a 1/3 chance that you will damage them instead, but if you make sure they are wearing headgear, there is no chance of failure.
- If the target had no Brute or Burn damage when you hit them, the cooldown will be much shorter, and a message will appear mentioning that they had no wounds you can heal.
- The target can still take damage by your failed attempt to bless them.
- This cannot be used on creatures in Critical health.
- Can be used to summon Remilia, a bat familiar ghost role, which can be respawned 3 minutes after dying.
- Deals 1 point of Blunt damage and 25 points of Holy damage when used as a melee weapon.
- Holy damage typically only affects supernatural creatures, such as Revenants.
- Can be used for Prayer at any time.
A non-Chaplain who acquires a bible can still use it to store items or bless liquids (or hit things with it), but cannot summon a familiar, and will take 2.5 Heat, Shock, Cold, and Caustic damage if attempting to heal with it.
A spare bible can usually be found in a PietyVend - this can be helpful in case it goes missing, or in case a particularly zealous crewmate wishes to join your religion and spread the word.
The Crematorium
On certain stations, the chapel may contain a crematorium. This can be used to incinerate bodies in order to keep the station from piling up with the corpses of wildlife or unrevivable crew. It is your responsibility to deliver their last rites and remove any belongings before cremation. Make sure to check on the crematorium periodically, as other departments may send the deceased your way, and if you're not careful you could come back to a mountain of corpses releasing miasma everywhere.
Note that reviving dead crewmates requires an intact body, so savvy antagonists may use the crematorium to destroy the bodies of those they want to remain dead. If you're not an antagonist yourself, you should likely report any potential break-ins to Security.
The Altar
Your chapel will usually feature an altar of some sort, which anyone can offer prayers to. From a gameplay standpoint, this provides an in-character way to directly send messages to server admins (similar to the Red Phone found in the Bridge on most stations). This can be useful for notifying the admins of severe gameplay problems that need fixing via "divine intervention" (such as the Automated Trade Station spawning inside of an asteroid). Since all prayers are sent directly to all server admins, repeatedly sending pointless or annoying messages should be avoided, lest the admins smite you for being a nuisance.
