Talk:Cargo Technician

From Space Station 14 Wiki

This page seems to be wildly outdated

The "Cargo Ordering Computer" no longer exists, it's weird there are both explanations on how cargo used to work and then have it followed up by how it does work (not to mention having the "Cargo Ordering Computer" section and the "Cargo Request Computer" section right next to each other).

And recently department funding has been overhauled and that's also missing (although to be fair it also still being changed, but a section about it with a warning "this is still work in progress" won't hurt).

The "Job" type pages are supposed to be guides, no? I can imagine a new player being a bit confused by this, if not just misinformed.

There might still be value to have the 'old' way cargo used to work saved somewhere, either for branches that might still use it or just generally for the sake of archiving. Maybe a separate "outdated cargo" page should keep that information? Or is it better to just fix the current page and let the old info stay in the 'history' tab? Or perhaps just have this page formatted in such a way that there's a "current cargo" and an "old cargo"?

Usually wikis deal with changes by updating relevant info and writing history entries. Since the game is still in its «playtesting» phase hardly anything gets preserved/archived, and it seems fine because we still have A LOT of stuff to even start covering.
I think it will be okay to just update the relevant info and optionally add a «history» section with an entry describing what changed and when. Since the stable branch is on 2-week update schedule it might be a good idea to refer to updates by their release date. Lmk if you maybe need a template for this? We certainly would need something like that in the future. Take inspo from other big wikis (eg terraria/minecraft).
Guide pages are best to be separate pages because there could be multiple guides written by different people, and they seem subjective? Job pages should cover what the specific job is about, what it entails, your duties, etc. Department pages cover general department stuff. Stuff like "quick guide to get cargo rich" should probably go into a separate guide page, but some general advice could be left on.
For forks it of course takes time to take these updates in, modify/discard even, but I rarely see old mechanics specifically chosen to stay. I say if we want to preserve stuff, one way to do so is through a history section. And if an update affected a major part of that, optionally a separate page could be made describing "XYZ" before update "ZYX", and link to through a relevant history entry.
